Hi there, I'm Jen, the creator and founder of The Modern Sonoran. I live in Chandler, Arizona, with my family, surrounded by the beauty of the Sonoran Desert (hence the name!). Life is full with three kids, the youngest just 7 months old, but it's also filled with purpose and intention.

My journey into candle-making began when I realized that many candles on the market contained harmful ingredients, after a bad experience with a trendy but toxic candle that gave me a sinus headache and a fun rash that took months to clear up. In frustration, I began researching the candle industry and my findings turned my frustration into anger, then determination. I wanted something safer for my family. As I fine tuned my candles, everyone I shared them with became almost more excited about them than I was and I realized that the candles I had created were worth sharing with others.

At The Modern Sonoran, we set out to do more than just make candles—we wanted to make candles that you *truly* feel good about using in your home. Our journey into candle-making revealed that most “coconut” candles on the market use blends that contain paraffin or soy—two ingredients we were determined to avoid. It’s tricky out there: many “soy-free” coconut candles still contain paraffin, and those labeled “paraffin-free” often sneak in soy. We knew there had to be a cleaner, safer way, and that's why we developed our very own wax blend, free from these common additives.

Why We Don’t Use Soy or Paraffin

The Trouble with Paraffin

Paraffin, a byproduct of petroleum, is widely used in candles because it's inexpensive and raises the melt point of wax blends. However, burning paraffin releases harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene, both known carcinogens. These chemicals compromise your indoor air quality—definitely not something we want for your home. For us, paraffin was a *no-go* from the start.

The Soy Dilemma

While soy might seem like a natural alternative, there’s more to the story. Most soy used in candles is genetically modified and heavily treated with herbicides like glyphosate, a substance that’s been linked to potential health risks, including cancer. On top of that, soy candles can sometimes trigger headaches for those with sensitivities. Simply put, we didn’t want soy in our candles.

We decided to take a different path—crafting a unique wax blend using coconut and hemp. Both are sustainable, eco-friendly crops that align with our vision for cleaner, safer candles. Here’s why this wax blend is a superior choice:

The Role of Beeswax: Raising the Melt Point and Cleaning the Air

Since we’re based in the *Sonoran Desert*, we were concerned about the low melt point of pure coconut and hemp waxes. This is why many other coconut wax blends sneak in paraffin or soy—to raise the melt point cheaply. But instead of following that path, we chose to enhance our wax with **natural beeswax**.

Here’s why we went with beeswax:

• Melting Point: Beeswax helps raise the melt point of our candles just enough so that they can hold up during shipping without melting into a puddle of wax. While our candles can still be vulnerable in the extreme summer heat, beeswax offers a natural solution for a better melt point, which is crucial given our hot desert climate.
• Purifies the Air:** Beeswax does more than just stabilize the wax—it actively *cleans* the air as it burns. Beeswax releases negative ions that bind to positively charged pollutants like dust and pollen, helping to neutralize airborne irritants. This means when you burn our candles, you’re not just adding a cozy ambiance to your home; you're also purifying the air.
